"summary": "Bettei Amafuru Oka is a 15-room annex on a hill over Kagoshima Bay, the most upscale stay in Ibusuki, taking just four groups a day and grafted onto a half-dormant resort complex, but it has onsen in every room, the sunaburo-and-ceramic-spa circuit, warm Nepali-staffed hospitality and chef Kanemasa Matsumoto's serious French cooking. The bathing culture and the bay views make the stay, and the surrounding complex feels eerie, dated and underused.",

There are fewer courses than a kaiseki but the execution was superb: foie gras and grilled unagi over scrambled eggs, kanpachi carpaccio with caviar and mango, and Ibusuki beef grilled over Sakurajima lava rocks. Breakfast is Western only."

The rest is reached through the Bay Hills wing: several private onsens, Ibusuki's sunaburo (buried to the neck in heated volcanic sand for ten to fifteen minutes) and a ceramic spa where you soak among radiostone beads heated by spring water, which he found a striking detox."

The GM says the property would not be viable without foreign help, and it takes only four groups a day, so he calls the whole thing a superb, hospitality-driven experience."

KI-NRT's reservation is that it feels more like a hotel room than a luxury ryokan, with mostly carpeted floors and furnishings that could sit comfortably in a four-star hotel."

It is grafted onto the former Greenpia Ibusuki, whose surgeon owner made part a cancer hospital and the rest the 103-room Bay Hills hotel, nearly empty when KI-NRT stayed, so the vast, dated public areas you cross to the spa and restaurants feel eerie and underused, though they hold a library, a golf simulator and a theater."
