"summary": "A winery-owned Koshu ryokan that gave KI-NRT a \"fairy tale-like\" stay, with mesmerizing pond-and-garden grounds and glorious bathing, let down by middling cha-kaiseki, the one flaw he wished away. Both reviewers agree the magic lives in the Kotogawa and Tsuzumigawa suites, and in a lesser room it is a different inn. At $450–650 a night it is near the bottom of this collection's range, which makes the food an easy flaw to accept.",

KI-NRT found the food the weakest point of his stay: the clear soup with a chicken-stuffed lily-bulb manju and abalone was delicious and the handmade soba delightful, but the grilled amberjack was nothing special, the cedar-grilled Koshu beef tough and short on flavor, and the portions small. A 2024 guest also called it decent but not outstanding."

Its water ran a bit lukewarm for him. Indoors is a large onsen, and the two top suites have a hinoki hot-spring tub on the balcony above the koi pond."

KI-NRT spoke Japanese with them, so he cannot say how it goes in English, but a 2024 couple who spoke none found the language gap no problem at all because the staff tried so hard, and their winery tour was well organized, with a detailed translation of the Japanese-language guide."

The room itself does the job, tastefully furnished in muted tones, but has one sink, an older washlet and a deck shower with the head low on the railing, so KI-NRT crouched to rinse (a 2024 guest found that no chore). Entry rooms are not special in any way, so book a suite if you can."

The grounds are compact but artfully crafted, and KI-NRT found them mesmerizing and the inn unique and mystical. The salon pours unlimited free Maruki wine with wagashi, and the inn runs a winery tour."
