 "summary": "Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan is possibly the top ryokan in the center of Takayama, a minute from the old town and far nicer than its sister property Bekkan, but KI-NRT calls it, along with the other central options, far inferior to Wanosato, with good but not amazing food and a multi-story building that has nothing like a garden to give it charm from outside. Service is a real strength, led by an attentive named butler. It is very solid luxury if you want to sleep in the historic district, and his advice is to pair it with Wanosato instead of choosing between them.",

   "text": "The kaiseki meals were good but not amazing, and KI-NRT compares them directly with Wanosato, where the food was exceptional: here it was delicious but not memorable, run-of-the-mill for anyone whose expectations were formed at Japan's finest ryokans. Meals are served in the restaurant instead of your room, in a private room for each party. Takayama is deep in the mountains, so the kitchen leans on Hida beef, mountain vegetables and river fish."

   "text": "Kachoan has no onsen, and the bath is ordinary heated water, which KI-NRT notes may be off-putting to some. If hot-spring water is something you are after, he says to look elsewhere in Takayama."

   "text": "Service was the most impressive part of KI-NRT's two nights. Their nakai (a female butler), Yukimi, was a total sweetheart, low-key yet charming, and catered to their every whim, although they had little need of anything because they were already so well taken care of. The entire staff were gracious and polished, and you can tell they take pride in working at the top property in central Takayama. He reports no service issues at all."

   "text": "KI-NRT stayed in the Hanayagi no Ma, the top room, which occupies the 6th floor: 90m², clean, delightfully decorated (not too busy and not too spartan) and nicely appointed, though nothing about it struck him as particularly memorable. No room in the building has a balcony, and he does not know how far the windows open, which matters if you book to watch the Spring Festival procession pass right in front. Call and ask which rooms face the street."

   "text": "Kachoan has by far the best location of any ryokan in Takayama, a minute from the main old town area with its shrines and temples (the other central luxury options are about a 30-minute walk away), and the Spring Festival procession passes right in front. It is a single, tall multi-story building, though, with no grounds and nothing like a garden to give it charm from outside, and KI-NRT found it more of a hotel than a ryokan."
