"summary": "An intimate nine-room Otsuka-owned property on a ridge above the Naruto Strait, and KI-NRT's default refined stop for anyone entering Shikoku from Osaka or Kobe. Service is the strongest part (staff who remembered his wine picks and his room from a cherry-blossom stay years back), backed by a strait panorama he calls breathtaking at sunrise. His first stay left him lukewarm, closing with 'not that type of place'. The 2023 Zeiso villa fixes that gap, and his return ended with 'mission accomplished'.",

KI-NRT found Banri-so solid with standouts (Naruto Strait sea bream, an Awa beef katsu sandwich he calls the best he has had), but the grilled courses lacked distinction and the cherry salmon was overcooked. California Table was only good on his first visit, but the lobster teppanyaki and Awa wagyu were exceptional on his return. Breakfasts never repeat."

Each side has a small indoor and outdoor bath, one-person size, and the water is disinfected, partly recirculated and reheated because it comes up lukewarm. KI-NRT still enjoyed it but says it will not satisfy anyone after a serious onsen. The rooms have heated tap water in an excellent setup with a push-button jacuzzi."

On KI-NRT's return the same staff were there, including manager Takeshi Hara, and they remembered his wine selections, his wife's preference for warm drinking water and, when he tested a younger staff member, even that they had stayed in Room 103 during cherry blossom season. Guests are chauffeured to dinner in a Toyota Century although both restaurants are a short walk away."

Zeiso, added in 2023 by merging two rooms into a 120 sqm standalone villa, has a more contemporary Japanese look, and his verdict on it was mission accomplished."

Watching the bridge glow at sunrise was, for KI-NRT, a breathtaking moment and reason enough to plan another return. A dry rock garden sits outside Banri-so, and the Otsuka Museum of Art and the Naruto whirlpools are a 5-10 minute taxi ride away, which he thinks justifies two nights."
