 "summary": "An eight-villa contemporary onsen ryokan (2008) at the foot of the Kirishima mountains that delivered almost everything KI-NRT hoped for: standalone villas, private dining rooms and slick source-fed water that he singled out for special mention. The one blemish was the policy of charging 440 yen for each extra bath towel, and a manager who simply said that two per guest is generally sufficient, which was enough that he would almost certainly pick Myoken Ishiharaso or Wasure no Sato Gajoen over a return visit, so it sits just under the region's established inns despite the quality of the stay.",

   "text": "All meals are served in a private koshitsu dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows over the water garden. The kaiseki dinner was satisfying, with classics such as shrimp tempura, and the Kagoshima A5 wagyu shabu shabu was outstanding: KI-NRT found the beef superb and the salt-dashi and sesame ponzu dipping sauces equally impressive. Breakfast was tasty but less memorable, and he would have preferred a better grilled fish to the standard salmon."

   "text": "Every villa has its own source-fed onsen bath out on the patio (Kobai, the top room, has an indoor bath too), large enough for two or three people. The water is pumped from 1,200 meters directly below the property and is so slick and moisturizing that KI-NRT and his wife skipped lotion afterwards. There is no communal bath and no rental bath, but he thinks the in-room furo should satisfy the most discriminating onsen aficionados."

   "text": "You have dedicated servers for both dinner and breakfast, and their knowledge and engaging personalities made for easy, enjoyable conversation about the area and the food. The one real blemish was the towel policy.    "text": "Even the base rooms are standalone villas with a 70 square metre footprint, in a contemporary Japanese-modern style. KI-NRT stayed in Kobai, the top room, refurbished in 2023, with a large deck and garden off the living room, a Ryoanji-style dry rock garden by the bedroom, a sunken table, and indoor and outdoor onsen baths. It felt a bit like sleeping inside an art exhibit, and he ranks it with the top rooms at the best ryokans."

   "text": "Isshin stands at the foot of the lush Kirishima mountains, about 30 minutes north of Myoken Ishiharaso and close to Kirishima's prime hiking trails, with Mt. Shimoe on the horizon. A water garden lies between the reception, lounge, dining area and villas, with a covered walkway hovering above it, and with the mountains behind it makes a charming picture, especially at night when the pool and walkways are lit. KI-NRT calls the setting serene."
