"summary": "Kaichoro is an adults-only, 8-room annex of the 440-year-old, 83-room Fukuichi in Ikaho Onsen, with onsen in every room and its own entrance, lobby and staff, so you get the Ikaho onsen experience (two spring varieties, in-room open-air baths, warm staff) without the crowds of the big parent. The kitchen is the weak leg, with a few courses worthy of the setting next to izakaya-plain ones. KI-NRT found it worth doing for the golden water and an off-the-beaten-path town, and he has had better meals at cheaper ryokans.",

Several servings were wonderful, the fugu in a jellied dashi broth was memorable and so was the shirako (cod milt) tempura, but other courses were unimaginative and not appropriate for a ryokan of this class; the buri daikon is a typical izakaya dish and this one did not stand out either. Breakfast was an improvement, though not enough to change his belief that he has had better meals at cheaper ryokans."

To try the Golden, book the rental bath Fuwari, which comes straight from the source. The other two rental baths, Yurari and Sarari, are Mt. Haruna tap water with no onsen in them, and the communal baths with both types are in Fukuichi."

Kaichoro has its own dedicated staff, separate from Fukuichi, and although he does his own research and asks little of ryokan staff, he has little doubt they would do everything they could should the need arise."

The one letdown is the cheap single-use, tear-open toiletries, which puzzled him at this level."

A passageway through the second Fukuichi building drops you at step 300 of Ikaho's 365 stone steps. Ikaho itself is a faded-glory, Showa-era onsen town, worth doing if you are in the area and want to be off the beaten path, though KI-NRT would not call it a bucket-list destination."
