"summary": "Hakodate's most famous onsen ryokan, a 1924 inn that hosted the Emperor and came back from a years-long pandemic closure. KI-NRT's 2025 return found the kimono-clad personal service and source-fed sea-view baths as good as he remembered, but the once-revered kitchen has stood still and even the top room is dated. He thinks it may still be the best ryokan in Hakodate, but it is far from a destination property.",

He once had Wakamatsu in his top-10 kaiseki experiences, but this time the zensai included matsukaze and homemade karasumi (both cheap izakaya items), a mukago yam bulb and a weird bacon-and-squid roll. He believes the chef is the same, and Mrs. KI-NRT is firm that the kitchen has stood still. Whale meat turns up in the miso soup, so tell them in advance if you object."

KI-NRT went on an unusually cold early-November day and found the dips heavenly, and Yunokawa Onsen is well regarded for its healing properties. The bath in the room is basic tap water that you fill yourself."

When he showed her photos from his stay two decades earlier she ran off and came back with Ms. Kobayashi, the same attendant, in tow. He calls the service exceptionally high on both visits."

KI-NRT stayed in Yachiyo, the top room, in the original building: a 90m² reproduction of the suite where Emperor Shōwa stayed in 1954 that mixes a tatami room with a Taishō-era Western sitting area and a bedroom. He found the mix odd but acceptable for history's sake; the bathroom with its outdated toilet and a urinal is unacceptable, though, and the Wi-Fi was dial-up slow. The panoramic views made up for some of it."

It is a northern sea of rough water and gloomy skies most days, so you would not mistake it for Amanpulo or Amanoi. The original 1924 building is tasteful inside, but the 1994 new wing still looks like a bubble-era building in need of a fresh coat of paint."
