 "summary": "A ten-room, family-run classic that delivers the traditional ryokan feeling in spades (riverside seclusion, antiques in the hallways, dinner in a private room), and KI-NRT still calls it a tad overrated, because across repeat stays it never excelled at any one thing: the food is good but not great, the rooms decent and minimalist, and the service not quite as personalized as you would expect from so small a family-run house. It is a lovely, authentic first ryokan for a traditionalist, but it is not a destination in itself, and he says the same of the whole Kaga area.",

   "text": "Kayotei serves traditional kaiseki, and in crab season that means a heaping helping of Zuwai-gani snow crab: sashimi, charcoal-grilled, crab meat and tomalley cooked over a lava rock, and a clear soup with crab-paste balls and yuzu that KI-NRT called simply divine. It was done very nicely, but nothing stood out as innovative, it missed his top five Japanese meals, and over repeat visits he has settled on good but not great, even in crab season."

   "text": "The Higashiyama Suite, the top room, has its own in-room onsen bath (hot-spring water, but indoors, with no open-air tub). Nobody in the thread has written about the shared baths."

   "text": "The room attendant, Ms. Terue, was charming, warm and there to meet every need, and she also served dinner. Meals are served in a private room elsewhere in the building and not in your own room, which KI-NRT would have preferred, though at least guests are not made to eat together in an open dining area. His considered verdict over repeat stays is that service is not quite as personalized as you would expect in such a small, family-run property."

   "text": "The Higashiyama Suite, the top room, is a spacious Japanese-style room with a wide balcony over the forest and a private onsen bath, and the furnishings are decidedly minimalist. One curious touch is a mini-room between balcony and living room with a Victorian-era table and chairs, old-school but hardly Japanese. The rooms are neither worn nor pristine, scuffed here and there, and KI-NRT says they lack the zen luxury some other ryokans convey."

   "text": "Kayotei sits secluded on a beautiful stretch of serene river outside Yamanaka Onsen, and the architecture blends into the forest so well that KI-NRT calls the sense of place wonderful. The hallways are lined with antiques, hand-made pottery and traditional paintings, and the effect is of having gone back in time. Yamanaka Onsen is a sleepy little onsen town he found charming, and the Kakusenkei footpath along the river is a nice walk."
