"summary": "Kinugawa Kanaya is a 41-room hotel billed as Japan's first Western-style luxury establishment, with shoes-on hotel formality, optional meals and a photogenic garden in Kinugawa Onsen near Nikko. KI-NRT put the kaiseki among the top five meals he has had at any top-flight hotel or ryokan in Japan, names the hotel among the few luxury ryokans with a teppanyaki table, and felt the service was perfect. He still gave it four stars rather than five, because the rooms run small for the exorbitant price and he would only maybe return, and that is what keeps the hotel from being an all-time great.",

The first course alone ran from chawanmushi to ayu, and nothing was old-fashioned: each course was familiar yet prepared in an unusual way, above all a white-miso bouillabaisse of sea bream, prawn and scallops, the best soup he has had. He also lists it among the top ryokans with teppanyaki."

Kinugawa Onsen water, an alkaline simple spring, fills two large communal baths above the river valley with an open-air section, plus a bookable private bath and a sauna. Nobody in the thread has described the water, the temperature or the view, so the bathing itself has no verdict."

All seven categories are 66 m² (only the John Kanaya Suite is bigger), differing only by floor, lounge access, balcony size and where the in-room onsen bath sits. For the exorbitant price he expected more: not claustrophobic, yet not roomy enough to laze in all day. His junior suite, unlike the dark common areas, was bright, airy and contemporary Japanese, with not a scuff mark in sight."

It is a classic luxury hotel from an earlier Western era, dark brown leather in the common areas, aging but in really good shape, and keeps its historic charm while adapting to the times. Kinugawa is an onsen town 30 minutes from central Nikko."
