"summary": "Kei is the 2019-opened bid for luxury in Japan's most famous onsen town, and as of KI-NRT's November 2023 stay it isn't there yet: genuine two-source onsen and a satisfying kaiseki inside an inn that cut corners on towels, toiletries and, most damagingly, staff training, given what it charges. He left glad to have seen Kusatsu and unconvinced by Kei, and two years on he still says the town \"just doesn't have an amazing place to stay.\"",

KI-NRT has had better kaiseki, but he was satisfied with quality and quantity and doubts anyone leaves hungry or without a few memorable dishes. Breakfast was equally refined, though the variety at both meals fell a little short of the luxury norm."

Takasago and the A01 suite have open-air room baths fed from the more acidic Bandaiko Gensen, while C01 and the two indoor rental baths run on the softer Jizo Gensen, better for sensitive skin. The indoor rentals are unique and atmospheric, and Ryoku, the open-air one, is ordinary. Only three of the seven rooms have their own onsen, which KI-NRT calls inexcusable for a place sold as Kusatsu's pinnacle of luxury."

At dinner no single waitperson is assigned to your table, and the servers, eager and charming, did not know the dishes well, so \"where did this rice come from?\" often got \"let me find out.\" He left saying staff training is what stands between Kei and true destination status."

It ticks most boxes, but the corner-cutting shows: uneven furnishings, small thin towels that barely absorb, a toilet without the one-touch seat lift, and minimal low-grade toiletries. An odd work alcove off the bedroom got nicknamed \"the dungeon\"."

Kei is a nondescript building a five-minute uphill walk from there, facing the small Jizo Gensen spring square. There is no garden or grounds at all, though KI-NRT doubts any ryokan near the centre has one either."
