 "summary": "Sakan Shoan is an eleven-room bayside inn 45 minutes northeast of Sendai, and the setting is why you go: spectacular Matsushima Bay views from just about anywhere on the property, plus good local sashimi and abalone served in a private dining room hosted to a very high standard. It is a ryokan/hotel hybrid with no onsen at all and view suites that run small, but KI-NRT wouldn't hesitate to return, which makes it a solid Tohoku view stop, if not quite a destination inn.",

   "text": "Meals are served in a private dining room (not your own room), and the strength is the locally caught seafood, above all the sashimi, with the abalone another highlight. KI-NRT enjoyed the meals but was not blown away, which was fine because he never expected Sakan Shoan to be a culinary destination; a bit more ingenuity and creative flair would help the kaiseki."

The rooms have baths but not hot-spring ones, and there is no gender-segregated communal onsen either, which surprised KI-NRT for a luxury ryokan in this part of Japan. He called the lack a real bummer given the serenity and beauty of the setting, though he notes that part of this is out of the property's control."

   "text": "Sakan Shoan is hosted to a very high standard. Dinner was looked after by Nana Suzuki, who was charming and proactive and explained every detail of each course to KI-NRT."

   "text": "KI-NRT booked Oimatsu, a B Type Japanese and Western corner room, the top category with a bay view. It had sufficient but not abundant space, a tatami sitting area and a separate bedroom with two Western beds, and is otherwise Japanese in decor and furnishings, which he found the best of both worlds. The larger Tokubetsu-shitsu suites above it have the space but no view, so if the bay matters, take a B Type."

   "text": "Sakan Shoan is tucked into its own small cove about ten minutes' drive from Matsushima's centre, so it is private and serene, and the view from just about anywhere is spectacular, above all at sunset. Because the inn is on its own secluded bay you miss the whole island-studded panorama, though KI-NRT still calls it a million-dollar view. He adds that Matsushima's billing as one of Japan's three great views oversells it."
