 "summary": "Modern Ryokan kishi-ke is a one-group-at-a-time villa in Kamakura run by a wonderful English-speaking couple and built around on-site experiences (zazen, tea ceremonies, katana training) that KI-NRT mostly skipped in favor of the temples. He really enjoyed the stay and would love to return and do it properly, while being clear it is no one-room Aman or Asaba, since the villa layout is awkward, there is no onsen and dinner is out on the town.",

   "text": "Breakfast is included and is vegetarian Buddhist shojin cuisine, each dish prepared by Hitomi Kishi herself; on both days it was creative, nutritious and hearty (kabocha potage, udon in an amazing broth, marinated tofu skin made to mimic unagi), and KI-NRT never missed meat or fish. Dinner is not included, so you dine out in Kamakura, though kishi-ke can prepare anything from sushi to a shojin dinner if asked in advance."

   "text": "Nobuyuki and Hitomi Kishi, the couple who own and run kishi-ke, host one group at a time, and KI-NRT had a delightful time with them learning about the area, how kishi-ke came to be and their plans. Nobuyuki studied English in Buffalo for a year and speaks it very well, and he doubles as a private concierge: he was extremely helpful over WhatsApp and secured a last-minute table at a popular shirasu (whitebait) restaurant."

   "text": "The two-story villa has 88 square metres indoors, but KI-NRT did not find it as usable as he hoped: the first floor is a tatami room used for breakfast, the bedroom and bathroom are upstairs, and the stairs between the floors are outside, a design flaw that made it too much of a hassle to use the first floor for anything but breakfast. One side faces the ocean, but the view is partially obscured by ugly electric poles and wires."

   "text": "kishi-ke is behind the main coastal road across from Yuigahama Beach, with Hasedera and the Great Buddha within walking distance and some decent restaurants nearby, though it is hemmed in by houses and businesses. A dry rock garden separates the reception, where check-in opens with a tea ceremony, from the villa. Strict zoning caps Kamakura at 980 guest rooms, so early mornings are quiet, and KI-NRT had the Great Buddha to himself at 8AM."
