"summary": "A luxury hotel rebuilt from scratch as a modern boutique property, right next to Unzen Jigoku, the steaming sulphur hells, with front-row views of them from most rooms and the lounge, and after a posh 2018 renovation it has a rooftop lounge over the hellscape and the feel of an all-inclusive. KI-NRT's three-night stay in a Hanare room was 'almost perfect', with food he puts up with the best ryokans and hotels in Japan, while Nagasaki Joe on a one-night return found the nine-course dinner good but uneven and the hotel hard to beat for a hot-spring stay in a great sightseeing location.",

Breakfast, with eggs Benedict and a sea bream meunière, was equally special. Nagasaki Joe found the nine-course dinner good but uneven (tough sashimi) and breakfast the same."

The water is Unzen's own, since the hotel stands right beside Unzen Jigoku, the steaming hot-spring hells. Nagasaki Joe, who stayed one night in 2022, says the hotel is hard to beat for hot-spring bathing."

The pacing of the meals was the best he has ever experienced, nine-plus courses in 90 minutes that never felt rushed, because the staff and kitchen keep an eye on how fast you eat so each course arrives when you want it. He calls the staff elegant and friendly."

KI-NRT chose a Hanare, a detached building, for the extra privacy and space: the bedroom is separate from the living room, there are indoor and outdoor onsen baths, and Hanare guests dine in a private room, but you give up the view of the hells that the other rooms have. Nagasaki Joe describes the 2018 renovation as posh."

The grounds are immaculately maintained and the whole place is tranquil. Nagasaki Joe mentions the rooftop lounge over the hells and calls it a great sightseeing location."
