"summary": "Roka is Naoshima's first true luxury ryokan (opened 2022), from the family behind Kifu no Sato, modern and artsy, and on KI-NRT's 2023 stay still a work in progress: no onsen, corporate service, rigid meal times and thin amenities around a good island kaiseki. Next time on Naoshima he would take a suite at Benesse House, which he doesn't think is a major compromise and costs a fraction of what Roka charges. Roka is worth a stay for the art island more than for the inn itself.",

KI-NRT left plenty satisfied, but the later, larger courses could have used more imagination: the miso-glazed amberjack is a dish found all over Japan, and the yuzu-soy Spanish mackerel was bland. Dinner at Umioto Mari was the more memorable meal. Menus come in Japanese and English, though curiously there is none for breakfast."

The bath is an ordinary one, and to make up for it the inn supplies a large jar of onsen concentrate from Yunogo Onsen (where Kifu no Sato is) to add to the water, which KI-NRT calls better than nothing. He knew going in, but the lack of hot spring was the big bummer of his stay, and he would have thought the heir to Kifu no Sato could have found a way to get some onsen here."

"text": "Everyone was friendly and accommodating, but KI-NRT found the service too corporate for an 11-room inn: black uniforms, check-in in a lounge next to the kitchen, no butler and no private dining. Dinner is at 18:00 or 18:30 and breakfast at 08:00 or 08:30, and servers described each course by the book, so asking whether the fugu was local got \"let me check with the chef\". Bilingual menus and many non-Japanese staff suit foreign guests."

The other ten rooms are smaller, and all eleven face a small hill that is not much to look at; there is no TV. The toiletries are very limited for a luxury ryokan: only a toothbrush, toner and razor, with no moisturizer, cotton swabs or shaving foam."

KI-NRT spent most of his time at the museums around Benesse House, a 25-minute walk or an hourly shuttle away for non-guests. Roka itself is modern and stylish but the grounds are not huge: a rock garden out front and an outdoor hearth where a bonfire is lit for nightcaps."
