"summary": "Otogi no Yado Yoneya is a 17-room fairy-tale-themed onsen ryokan deep in rural Fukushima near Sukagawa, its rooms and seasonal 'Otogi Kaiseki' dinner built on a playful (but not gimmicky) storytelling concept, with a six-room Hanare 88 annex added in 2021. The bathing stands out most, with source water in every room plus communal rock baths, and KI-NRT counts it among the best onsen he has found. The remote setting has nothing famous nearby and the food drew real reservations, but he left calling it a place that stands out.",

He found it an enjoyable conversation piece that never upstaged the flavours, built on pesticide-free, largely wild ingredients. The wild Fukushima flounder sashimi was his standout, but the shorthorn beef came as a hamburger-style haché and the breakfast fish was plain salmon. Ikyu guests call the vegetables the best of any inn."

The water enters each bath from the bottom to limit contact with air and felt exceptionally smooth, like a silky skin lotion, so staff advise you not to rinse off afterwards. Every room has a bath flowing straight from the source (his was on a deck over the forest), plus communal indoor and outdoor rock baths and a mist sauna. It runs so hot he stopped the flow 30 minutes before bathing."

KI-NRT's private dinner server, Ms. Arima, born and raised in the area, explained each course and its fairy-tale link with an enthusiasm he called infectious, and he left full of smiles and gratitude. It sees about one overseas guest a month yet stays fully booked year-round. Some Ikyu guests find the narrated dinner too long (7 PM to near 9:30)."

He picked Suite #887 (54 square metres) over the 80-square-metre flagship Nazumu at the same price, for its expansive patio with a dazzling open-air bath over the forest, where Nazumu has only an ordinary indoor bath. Both are junior suites. The main rooms were redone in 2024."

Inside it is rural-modern Japanese with a streak of eccentricity, which KI-NRT calls quirky without overwhelming the senses: Alice in Wonderland porcelain by Lladró, a Hobbit-house wine cellar and a Gaudí-inspired installation in front of the communal baths, and a lounge with free drinks and snacks."
