"summary": "An eight-room seaside inn in Oarai, founded in 1888 and rebuilt in 2011, that KI-NRT chose for its location: twenty minutes from both Hitachi Seaside Park and Kairakuen, and within reach of Ashikaga's wisteria. He calls it not remotely in the league of Japan's top ryokans and no destination in itself, but the torii view, the waves and an enjoyable local dinner made a flower-season base he would use again.",

KI-NRT found it enjoyable: Hitachi beef shabu-shabu, a kinmedai-broth noodle soup in place of rice and a shirasu pizza that worked shockingly well, though courses came out too fast, the next set down before the last was finished. Breakfast was much weaker (nikujaga and one fish the first morning)."

The gender-segregated communal baths do not stock towels, so you carry your own from the room, something he noted even fairly average ryokan no longer ask of guests."

KI-NRT enjoyed chatting with Ms. Akita, the dinner server and an Oarai local, and Ms. Nakata, an energetic young woman from Hitachinaka who handled breakfast. It fell short in the details. Dinner courses came out on top of each other, slippers had to be asked for, no sleepwear beyond yukata was provided, and the meal plan could not be varied by night without a phone call."

KI-NRT calls it spacious and very comfortable but more rustic than luxurious: one sink, yukata but no sleepwear, and slippers only on request over floors that did not seem heated. Entry-level rooms also have a private veranda over the rocks."

The shoreline is a designated Place of Scenic Beauty, part rocky, part sandy beach, and from the rooms you watch families in the tide pools. The exterior is dated and concrete-heavy with almost no signage (KI-NRT drove past it twice), but inside it is warm and wood-heavy, with rooftop terraces over the sea."
