   "text": "Maki no Oto is known among Japanese travelers for its French-Japanese fusion cooking, and the food is what disappointed KI-NRT most. He found it only 'good', with no dish that stood out: the grilled red tilefish with vermouth sauce was just okay, the cutlass fish with kogashi butter likewise, and the grilled ayu over vegetable terrine only adequate. He expected more umami from Sea of Japan seafood and would not drive out just to eat here."

The bath in the room is an ordinary tub with jacuzzi functionality, and the bathroom is where the property feels most dated: green wall tiles that look 1980s (though the building went up in 2005), a single sink, and the shower and toilet sharing one space, which KI-NRT despises."

   "text": "Service was not particularly proactive on KI-NRT's stay, and the arrival set the tone. The entrance is unassuming and narrow enough to mistake for someone's small home, they had to go inside and call for someone, and were then pointed to a parking structure about a quarter of a mile away with no offer to park the car for them. He felt the inn never managed the special vibe that other luxury ryokans pull off, though nothing was a big fail."

   "text": "KI-NRT booked the best of the three rooms, the executive room that takes up the whole second floor, and even that felt smaller than its listed 57 square metres. The bedroom is only partly cut off from the living room by a glass wall that stops short of the walls, and its sheer curtain gives neither privacy nor darkness. The furnishings are 'fine' and basic, going for a country vibe, and a raised tatami corner crowds the living room."

   "text": "The auberge sits in remote farmland in Nanto, a satoyama landscape of fields that is pretty and serene though not jaw-dropping, a 15 minute drive from Ainokura, so there is major sightseeing nearby. The fields are the calming influence, so a garden is no loss, yet on the property there is nothing to do: one building holds the lounge, restaurant and three rooms, with no talk or performance to give a sense of place, which KI-NRT counts against it."
