 "summary": "A seven-room Tadao Ando retreat above Matsuyama that appears on many 'ryokans to stay at before you die' lists, and KI-NRT is not entirely sure why. It is exclusive, with that famous pool, and the food and service draw real praise: sea bream and a spectacular Takikomi Tai Meshi at dinner, staff who got everything right. But there is no true onsen (the rentable pool, sauna and jacuzzi struck him as an artificial, party-mood dungeon), and the aging concrete is the flaw that leaves him cold, so he would sooner return to Oborozukiyo.",

   "text": "Dinner is built on Seto Inland Sea seafood, and the local red sea bream, Spanish mackerel and white horse head were all fantastic, with the Takikomi Tai Meshi (rice cooked with red sea bream) spectacular. The executive chef came over from sister property Iki Kairi Murakami and still brings in longtooth grouper and blackthroat seaperch from Iki. KI-NRT puts the food at very good, memorable but not top class."

   "text": "There is no onsen bath in the rooms or communal bath; instead Aonagi has a pool with a sauna and an onsen jacuzzi that guests rent privately. KI-NRT did not like it: a jacuzzi gives off a party atmosphere where an onsen should be calm and relaxing, and stylish as they are, the pool and jacuzzi struck him as an artificially created dungeon. He would have preferred something open-air, and the missing real bath in the room is his one nit to pick."

   "text": "Service is attentive and prompt, and KI-NRT says everything about the property was done right. He went in unsure about the food and service, since so much of the attention goes to the architecture, and they turned out to be the definite highlights of his stay."

   "text": "The best of the seven rooms is the Aonagi Suite, a massive 169.6 square metre duplex, and although KI-NRT prefers single-storey rooms, the maisonette layout allows gigantic double-height windows that look over the iconic pool to the Seto Inland Sea and its islands. The decor is tastefully minimalistic, but the interior is beginning to show its age in design and maintenance. It is also the only room where meals are served in the room."

   "text": "Aonagi is Tadao Ando's creation above Matsuyama, with the iconic pool as the centrepiece and a view of the Seto Inland Sea that KI-NRT calls Instagram-worthy. The architecture left him cold. There are interesting nooks and crannies, but to him it is a sea of concrete, more like a museum or a European castle than a comfortable home. It is a 25-minute drive from Dogo Onsen, and he thinks you need to be a big fan of Ando to stay more than a night."
