"summary": "A 23-room inn from 1868 on the Tango Peninsula that exists for Taiza-gani, the 'phantom crab' that only five local boats bring in. The crab kaiseki is inventive and outstanding, the service is impeccable and the silk-art rooms are handsome. The onsen in the name is trucked, heated, chlorinated water with a noticeable chlorine smell in every bath, and KI-NRT says this is not the inn to book if bathing is a priority. The crab is why you go.",

"text": "The Kiwame course is the only one with Taiza-gani, the 'phantom crab' that five local boats bring in, and it is capped at eight guests, so book months ahead. Every dish was outstanding: yubiki body meat barely scalded, legs swished in the dashi pot until they open like a flower, and tomalley fresh enough to eat raw. KI-NRT puts the crab cooking slightly ahead of Bouyourou's, but a loud table in the semi-private dining room drowned out the server."

Lower room categories have no bath of their own and there is no large communal bath. He says this is definitely not the ryokan to visit if onsen is a high priority."

Mr. Wada looked after Mrs. KI-NRT's mother's wheelchair and guided the party throughout, and the young dinner and breakfast servers, Aoi Yamada and Kou Kamataki, were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Mr. Kamataki is decent in English, so if you don't speak Japanese he would be a good choice as your server."

Kinean runs 60m² and the Sanzenhou special room 78.6m² with an open-air terrace bath, a minor step up. KI-NRT finds the higher-end rooms nicer and roomier than Bouyourou's, but the lower categories have no onsen."

A separate 2017 lounge building has a library and a terrace with panoramic sea views and the same silk art as the rooms. It is also the only luxury inn here that takes children under 13."
