   "text": "KI-NRT has always put the food a small notch below the best ryokan kitchens, though on his 2024 stay the kaiseki was better than he remembered and the desserts the most elaborate he has seen (five pastry chefs for 11 rooms). Two-night guests can order a soft-shelled turtle dinner, and the French toast at the Western breakfast gets raves. Other guests run from the one kaiseki meal to have in Japan to hit-or-miss, with average sushi."

   "text": "Bathing is all private: every room has its own onsen (Shien-an has four) and three rental baths are booked by the hour. Chikurin no Yu, a big two-part bath in the lit bamboo forest, is the one to book at all costs, and KI-NRT calls it one of the most blissful private open-air onsens anywhere; the pool-sized Chikujo no Ma is for the four special rooms only. Yuzu floats in the tubs at night. Deep-winter snow can shut the fully exposed baths."

   "text": "Your nakai-san is a real butler here: she serves every meal including breakfast, books the rental baths and walks you to them. KI-NRT's, Ms. Funama, had become GM by his third visit, and he puts the staff a close second to Sanso Murata, his best anywhere. When a blizzard caught one couple's rental car, the inn had chains driven up from the nearest town. A one-night guest found the staff stretched, with a 20-minute lull at dinner."

   "text": "The four special rooms (Shien-an, Kokyuan, Tenku and Sayo) are the ones to book, though old-world Omachian holds its own. Shien-an, with a Western bedroom, an irori hearth and four onsen, is one of the grandest rooms KI-NRT has ever stayed in, and one couple called the hardware the best of Asaba, Myoken and Takefue. Its shower and indoor bath sit in a separate unheated building, and two winter guests saw snow blow in through the sliding doors."

   "text": "A vast, secluded estate in its own bamboo grove a short drive from Kurokawa Onsen, and the one ryokan KI-NRT would spend all day at without wanting to go out: foot baths along the walkways, free ice cream, and a courtyard whose waterfall and bamboo are lit at night so it looks like something out of a fairy tale. Stone steps rule it out for limited mobility, and one river-loving couple found it less soul-nourishing than its fame suggests."
