"summary": "A rare outpost of luxury on Akita's remote Oga Peninsula, revived since 2017 by the okami Emiko Hirabayashi's investment in a new onsen source and refurbished rooms. KI-NRT calls it the most polarizing property he has experienced in Japan: breathtaking views and a soothing onsen against uneven service, food that is merely \"good\" and rooms he would avoid. She seemed cold at first and then warmed into an engaged host who gave them a tour of the whole property, and he says that without those conversations the stay would have ranked among his more underwhelming.",

The deep-fried horsehead fish went well with the eel and Akita Komachi rice, while the matcha ice cream finale was a downer in a prefecture with no tea tradition. He calls the food merely \"good\"."

In the Nishinokaze suite the in-room bath runs straight from the source and unfiltered and comes out brown, while the public and private rental baths are treated and recirculated, which leaves them clear."

KI-NRT found the staff a bit timid, and at dinner the server could not explain many of the appetizers and called on the okami, Emiko Hirabayashi, to step in. She seemed cold and inflexible at first (she initially refused to take the meat off the crab for Mrs. KI-NRT, who had one working arm), then warmed into long, engaging conversations and a tour of the property. There are no English-speaking staff yet."

KI-NRT's 77m² Nishinokaze suite was clean, contemporary and comfortable, a bit tight but with an incredible balcony over the ocean and bay and its own brown onsen tub. The 92m² Kitanokaze \"special room\" already looks tired, with no balcony and no bath at all, and he cannot imagine anyone choosing it over Nishinokaze. Interiors are simple, with no flowers or art, and the bathrooms carry no amenities."

The building is huge for ten rooms, with a lounge holding far more chairs than it needs and whole floors and corridors left unused."
