   "text": "Meals are normally served in the main restaurant, but during KI-NRT's pandemic-era stay dinner and breakfast came to the room together on large trays left outside the door, bento-style and nicely done, though no substitute for a multi-course kaiseki. He found the food more than adequate: the meals made them happy and content and added to the stay, but not among the most memorable he has had, and he has eaten at Japan's finest ryokan kitchens."

   "text": "The suites have a beautiful and soothing private open-air onsen bath right in the suite's own garden, which KI-NRT sums up as pure bliss and recommends booking (in the thread he describes it as an open-air onsen available for private use, with no onsen inside the room itself). The public baths are wonderful as well."

   "text": "Service was great, and the proprietress is not the usual unobtrusive, discreet hostess: she moves quickly, speaks loudly and in familiar Japanese, and is full of energy, which took KI-NRT aback at first, though she was warm spirited and did all she could to make the stay memorable, asking about plans and offering advice in a caring, never nosy way. His stay was at the height of the 2020 pandemic, so service was somewhat abnormal."

   "text": "The nine cottages have a rural-modern feel, like a luxurious log cabin, and because the property only opened in October 2017 everything is fresh and spotlessly clean, with the amenities and technology you expect of a luxury place and a sense of place. KI-NRT stayed in Sumire, the top-category cottage suite, a relatively spacious 79 square metres with the private open-air onsen in its garden, a very comfortable place to pass the time."

   "text": "Yunotani Senkei is deep in the mountainous interior of the Kii Peninsula, in Totsukawa, and its remoteness is part of its charm. KI-NRT chose it as possibly the highest-end ryokan within reach of Kumano Hongu Taisha and the Nakahechi trail, though the shrine is still a 30-minute drive, so you need a car (otherwise stay in Kumano Hongu proper). He calls it an excellent rural retreat in a beautiful, isolated area and would not hesitate to return."
