"summary": "A one-group-per-day villa in a restored Edo-period kominka above the rice paddies of the Kiso Valley, minutes from the Nakasendo post towns of Tsumago and Magome, with three bedrooms, a spectacular nail-less timber living hall and a wood-fired kitchen of foraged and wild-game cooking. KI-NRT found the stay memorable and completely private, but the service is casual and had its misses, there is no onsen, and the bedrooms are built for sleeping only. It makes most sense for a first Nakasendo visit or for a group taking the whole villa.",

KI-NRT found the meal \"prepared impeccably\" if not especially fancy, and the best dishes came early, a medley of wild vegetables and an exceptional tart of smoked Shinshu trout. The boar and deer kept some gaminess, and breakfast was a plain Western spread."

He calls the absence a bit of a disappointment in the colder months, and his own room had no hot water at all, so they walked about thirty feet to the adjacent bathroom whenever they wanted it."

"text": "Service was solid, as you would expect with one party at a time, and everyone on the largely non-Japanese team (Nepalese, American and Filipino among them) was friendly and engaging. It is deliberately casual and not a traditional omotenashi experience, and with that came a slightly less attentive level of service. Several requests needed repeated reminders, including Mrs. KI-NRT's request for warm water in the bedroom, which took nearly an hour."

The three duplex bedrooms (Matsu, Miya and Nori) are the weakest part, with the bathroom downstairs, steep stairs and low ceilings, and Miya is noticeably darker, so take another. KI-NRT calls this no major issue, but there was no sleepwear or toothbrush."

One group has the whole place each day, and the inn arranges guided rafting, paragliding, Nakasendo Trail walks, meditation and a tea-farm visit. KI-NRT's tandem paraglide with an Asian Games gold medalist was otherworldly once airborne."
