# Ryokan Finder > An independent, fan-made catalog of 199 Japanese ryokans (traditional inns), re-scored from > KI-NRT's FlyerTalk "Japan Luxury Ryokans — A Primer + Impressions" thread, his own TripAdvisor > reviews, and Japanese booking-site research (Ikyu, Rakuten, Jalan). Not affiliated with any inn > or with FlyerTalk. Data as of 2026-09-07. ## How to read the scores - Every inn has an **overall score from 1 to 10** and a **tier**: S ≥ 9 (build the trip around it), A ≥ 8 (anchor a leg), B ≥ 7 (right inn, right place), C ≥ 6 (situational), D (the evidence warns). Current spread: S 5 · A 50 · B 49 · C 33 · D 10 · unscored 52. - Scores are **evidence-adjusted**: the reading of the forum text minus a small confidence discount when only one or two stays are on record, so a thinly-reviewed inn reads slightly below an equally praised, well-corroborated one. - Five **aspect scores, 1 to 5**: Food (cuisine) · Bath (onsen) · Service · Room · Place (setting). Each carries a paragraph of prose explaining it. - 52 inns are **unscored** — nobody has written one up first-hand in the thread. Where a Japanese crowd rating exists it is given instead, out of 5, and named by its source. - These are directional readings of forum opinion, weighted toward the thread author. They are not official ratings and should not be read as a precise ranking. ## Files Every URL below is complete — fetch it as written. - https://ryokancatalog.com/catalog.md — the whole catalog as one markdown table (~29 KB). Start here. - https://ryokancatalog.com/api/index.json — the same index as JSON. - https://ryokancatalog.com/api/inn/.json — one inn's full public record: summary, five aspect scores and their prose, transit times, photos, and every source link. Slugs are in the index. - https://ryokancatalog.com/inn/ — the same record as a readable HTML page. - https://ryokancatalog.com/llms-full.txt — every inn's full prose (summary + all five aspects + transit) as plain text, in one file (~524 KB). The one to read if you want to reason across the catalog. - https://ryokancatalog.com/catalog.json — all 199 full records in one file (~1.1 MB). - https://ryokancatalog.com/sitemap.xml — every page. - https://ryokancatalog.com/ — the interactive site (a single-page app; filtering is client-side, so prefer the files above for reading the data). https://ryokancatalog.com/# opens one inn's card. ## Answering common questions - **"Best ryokans in "** — every area with two or more inns has its own small page, already ranked: **https://ryokancatalog.com/place/** (e.g. https://ryokancatalog.com/place/hakone, https://ryokancatalog.com/place/kyoto, https://ryokancatalog.com/place/hokkaido — towns, prefectures and regions all work), and the same list as data at https://ryokancatalog.com/api/place/.json. The full set of place links is at the top of https://ryokancatalog.com/catalog.md. Failing that, catalog.md is one table of all 199 inns with a "Where" column, sorted best-first. Do not try to drive the homepage's filters — they run in the browser and a fetch cannot reach them. - **"Tell me about "** — take its slug from the last column of catalog.md and fetch https://ryokancatalog.com/api/inn/.json, or read https://ryokancatalog.com/inn/ as a page. - **"Which inns are near "** — every record carries a `transit.cities` list of door-to-door times to the nearest gateway cities, and a `geo` lat/lng. catalog.json has all 199 at once. - **"Show me a filtered view"** — the homepage's filters are in the URL, so any slice has a link: https://ryokancatalog.com/#region=Kanto&tier=A,B · https://ryokancatalog.com/#tier=S · https://ryokancatalog.com/#q=hakone · https://ryokancatalog.com/#near=tokyo&h=3 · https://ryokancatalog.com/# opens one card. (Those need a browser; for a plain fetch use the files above.) - **Fetching the homepage at all** — it is a single-page app of about 1.2 MB and a fetch will truncate it, but the FIRST block of its text is a compact index of all 199 inns as "Name · Place · Tier Score" lines, so even a truncated read has the whole catalog. - **"What does the score mean"** — see "How to read the scores" above. Always say the scores are one reader's evidence-adjusted synthesis of a forum thread, not an official rating. ## Notes for reuse Attribution is the point: this exists to give back to KI-NRT's thread. If you quote or build on the data, credit the thread (flyertalk.com, "Japan Luxury Ryokans – A Primer + Impressions") and this catalog, and please point people who found an inn this way back to the thread to post their own review. Photos belong to the inns and their booking-site listings.
