Arcana Izu
B · 7.8 / 10right inn, right place

A 16-suite auberge above the Kano River whose French-Japanese kitchen KI-NRT ranks with the best restaurants of Tokyo and Paris. Everything else trails the food, since the rooms are comfortable but dated, and an October 2025 guest found the room tired and the service transactional. With Asaba fifteen minutes away, it works best as a one-night fusion interlude between traditional ryokans, and KI-NRT is not sure it is worth going out of your way for on its own.
Scores
Food 5 / 5
The French-Japanese cooking is why you stay, and KI-NRT puts it with the best restaurants of Tokyo, Paris and Rome. The sauces are fused with dashi, so even cream or tomato sauces carry umami, and many dishes are created for one season and never made again. Breakfast is nearly as noteworthy, with wasabi you grate yourself and a hearty lettuce-and-whitebait soup. Even Fc912, whose October 2025 stay was a letdown, found the food excellent.
Bath 4 / 5
Every suite has its own free-flowing kakenagashi onsen bath on a terrace over the Kano River. In The Suite it is a massive and wonderful open-air bath on the deck with views of the river and the forest beyond, which KI-NRT found a great place to unwind. There is no communal bath, and no lobby or common area either, since the property is a few room buildings and a separate restaurant.
Service 3 / 5
Service is the weak point. KI-NRT's two 2021 stays passed without complaint, but Fc912, who stayed in October 2025, found it transactional: the wooden plate holding the amuse-bouche was covered in spider webs, and when he pointed it out the waitstaff simply said sorry and neither the manager nor the chef followed up, which was not a language issue since he speaks Japanese fluently. Ikyu's guests are warmer and give it 4.69 over 51 reviews.
Room 3 / 5
The rooms are comfortable, airy and tasteful, with large windows and river views, but the property shows its age. The Suite, the top category, is 86.4 square metres and open-plan, which KI-NRT found not quite wow-inducing next to rooms well over 100 square metres, and the bathroom tiles look like they are from the turn of the century. The lower categories are far less spacious and darker, so book a top suite. Fc912 found the room tired in 2025.
Place 4 / 5
Arcana sits above the Kano River in Yugashima, and all sixteen suites face the river and valley below with the mountains and forest beyond, a setting KI-NRT says will lower anyone's heart rate by a few notches and should be stunning in autumn. There is no lobby, common area or grounds, only the room buildings and the restaurant, and he found it all good but nothing that stands out against Japan's top ryokans. Asaba is fifteen minutes away.
Getting there
- Tokyo — 2h10, 1 transfer. Shinkansen Tokyo→Mishima (~50 min), Izuhakone Sunzu line→Shuzenji (~35 min), then the free inn shuttle ~25 min (Ochiairo includes it — reserve; Arcana is a sparse Tokai bus or ~20-min taxi).
- Kyoto — 3h05, 1 transfer. Reverse of: Inn shuttle back to Shuzenji (~25 min), then Izuhakone Sunzu line + Tōkaidō Shinkansen Shuzenji→Kyoto door-to-door ~2h38 (Google Maps live routing, confirms the Mishima change).
