Minakami (Tanigawa Onsen), Gunma · Kanto · 18 rooms · Onsen ryokan

A · 8.7 / 10anchor a leg

KI-NRT ranks it in his top 20: “Not yet. But it's close. Gosho Gekkoju, Bettei Senjuan and Shinsen could easily be in the Top 10 - it depends on what you're looking for.”

Established in 1997 as the upscale annex of Ryokan Tanigawa, Senjuan is an artistic showpiece in the shadow of Mt. Tanigawa, with carvings on every beam, a glass-walled corridor onto the Alps and source-fed baths in all 18 rooms. KI-NRT says it could easily crack his top ten and would not hesitate to return. There is little to do here beyond soaking, eating and the scenery, which is exactly why it shines in deep winter, when the garden turns into a private snow park.

Scores

Food 4.5 / 5

The 11-course kaiseki was the highlight of KI-NRT's stay, built on local Gunma ingredients, and the most memorable dish was a savory souffle-like custard with grilled conger eel, red king crab, lily bulb and yuba that he called very original and simply sublime. Breakfast was quite original and pretty darned good too. Guests on Japanese sites are cooler on the meals than on the baths, and the kitchen will vary the menu for a second night if asked.

Bath 4.5 / 5

All 18 rooms have their own open-air onsen bath fed straight from the source, free-flowing and never recirculated, and the tub in Special Room SP looks over the river, forest and Alps, one of the more mesmerizing in-room views KI-NRT has seen. He found the water a bit lukewarm, which Westerners may prefer though Japanese bathers want it hotter; staff adjust it by hand. A riverside private sauna with a cold plunge was added in 2022.

Service

KI-NRT does not describe the service itself; he mentions only that meals come in a private dining room and that English menus are available on request, which he calls a nice touch. Guests on Japanese sites add that the kitchen will vary the menu for a second night and that staff adjust the in-room bath temperature by hand.

Room 4.5 / 5

Special Room SP, the top suite, has a living room, bedroom, tea room, a mini inner garden and an open-air onsen bath, and it is stylish beyond belief while still traditional, with understated artistic detail on everything from the entrance door to the sliding doors. It is almost completely tatami-matted, so you sit on cushions and sleep on futons. Special Room S is comparable, and KI-NRT says the entry-level room is nothing to shout about.

Place 4 / 5

Senjuan sits in the shadow of Mt. Tanigawa in northern Gunma, and a long curved corridor with floor-to-ceiling glass looks onto the Alps and the grounds, its walls and beams covered in carvings and small seasonal displays (ikebana, a string instrument, a miniature maple display). It is quite secluded, and KI-NRT warns there is little to do other than soaking, the scenery and the food; January guests call the garden a private snow park.
