An ultra-modern 18-room newcomer (June 2023) on a hilltop farm above the Yufuin valley, built around Tashi Gyamtso's vegetable-driven cooking, which KI-NRT found eclipsed even SingleThread and called reason alone to stay. Rooms are huge with kakenagashi onsen in every one; service was still green in late 2024, though later guests report no such stumbles. Book a Villa or Pavilion, because most other rooms have no view or pool, and plan the stay around dinner.

Scores

Food 5 / 5

Tashi Gyamtso, formerly sous chef at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, runs a farm nearby and builds each day's vegetable-driven dinner on what he picks from the fields that morning. KI-NRT found his creations extraordinary, just barely eclipsing SingleThread, his previous benchmark, and reason alone to stay. japanesegeek's vegetarian wife called it the best food she has ever tasted, and he put it on par with Tokyo's best French restaurants.

Bath 4 / 5

Every room has its own free-flowing (kakenagashi) hot-spring bath, the house's beauty water, and there are no shared baths. The two top Pavilions add a pool on the deck heated by the onsen overflow, which guests have used happily even in February, and KI-NRT counted the in-room onsen and pool among the pluses of his stay. The Hill Top Sauna is booked in private three-hour slots, and the 6 to 9am winter slot catches Yufuin's sea of clouds.

Service 3.5 / 5

Service was polite and professional on KI-NRT's December 2024 stay but nothing like the proactive service at Sanso Murata: he had to call the front desk repeatedly for the same request, the buggy took at least 15 minutes to come, and the stand-in manager seemed inexperienced. On the plus side, towels were refreshed several times a day. japanesegeek found the staff superb and kindly relaxed, and later guests no longer mention the early stumbles.

Room 4 / 5

All 18 rooms are ultra-modern and big, and every one has its own onsen bath. The ten villas, eight of 108 square metres and the two 165-square-metre Hilltop Sky Pavilions, add an outdoor onsen and an infinity pool heated by onsen overflow; the eight 78-square-metre hotel rooms have neither. KI-NRT's pavilion was well built, with a few lapses in the bathroom fittings. His pick is a 108-square-metre villa, a true suite for less.

Place 4 / 5

Enowa sits on a hilltop above the Yufuin valley with its own large working farm, in the town KI-NRT calls the country's greatest concentration of luxury ryokans. The two top Pavilions look out over a panoramic sweep of the valley, though Mt. Yufudake is at the far end and off to one side, and most rooms have no view. On winter mornings the valley below fills with Yufuin's sea of clouds, and January days run around 8°C with dustings of snow.
