Fufu Kawaguchiko is the Fufu group's flagship, a modern, youthful hotel-ryokan hybrid that KI-NRT calls the only choice for luxury travelers in the Fuji Five Lakes, though a slight notch below Fufu Nikko in most aspects. Everyone likes it and nobody is blown away. His reservations center on the noisy, crowded dinner room and on service that is polished but impersonal for 32 rooms, and the famous view is partially blocked by trees. Book the highest floor you can, ideally one of the two top suites with the open-air onsen bath.

Scores

Food 4 / 5

The kitchen does innovative modern kaiseki that stays Japanese: udon made partly from charcoal so the noodles are black, several courses of Fujinosuke (a salmon and trout cross), and KI-NRT found it mostly successful in balancing creativity with flavor. The champagne and Bordeaux list is deep, and Morita-san's fruit cocktails match Tokyo's best bars. The one drawback is the dining room, where two seatings pack the tables and it gets noisy.

Bath 3.5 / 5

The two 136 m² Luxury Premium Suites, the rooms KI-NRT tells you to book, have their own open-air bath of natural hot-spring water and a large balcony with a panoramic view of Mt. Fuji. Beyond noting that the bath is there, nobody who has stayed has written anything about the bathing itself.

Service 3.5 / 5

The staff are mostly young, which gives the place a casual, energetic feel without any snobbery, and the service is attentive and well coordinated: a 2024 couple got a warm welcome and a visit from the GM during dinner. KI-NRT found it lacks the personal touch of the finer family-owned ryokans and is unbefitting a property of only 32 rooms, decent service but not the memorable kind; he also wanted the waiters trained to explain each dish.

Room 4 / 5

The rooms are contemporary and bright, with greenery everywhere, and the ones to get are the two 136 m² Luxury Premium Suites, with a separate living room, an open-air onsen bath and a balcony facing Mt. Fuji. KI-NRT loved his but felt it lived more like 90–100 m², with a slightly claustrophobic bedroom. A 2024 guest's Comfort Suite showed some wear but was tasteful and comfortable. Ask for the third floor, which sees the lake and Fuji.

Place 4 / 5

The hotel sits on a slight rise about a mile back from Lake Kawaguchi, with a good but not exceptional view of Mt. Fuji on a clear day: tall pines on a neighbor's property block the left side (the owner declined to have them cut), so the higher floors see more. The shore is a five-minute ride on one of the hotel's e-bikes, and KI-NRT says nothing beats the Lake Kawaguchi area, with Chureito Pagoda nearby, for the most picturesque views of Fuji.
