Fufu Nikko
A · 8.8 / 10anchor a leg

Fufu's 24-room Nikko property, opened in 2020 on the old grounds of the Tamozawa imperial villa, gave the town its first true luxury inn, modern and hotel-like where most ryokans are traditional, with an onsen bath in every room and a short walk to Tosho-gu. The flaws are small, a very good kitchen that runs to a Fufu formula and pre-arrival emails that go unanswered, and guest after guest comes away glowing. One couple called it everything a luxury ryokan could and should be, and it has a place on KI-NRT's own top ten.
Scores
Food 4.5 / 5
KI-NRT called the dinners exceptional and puts them in the top ten of all his ryokan meals, with every ingredient explained by his server Chie Watanabe; his one wish was the option of eating in the room. Two members were cooler on the kaiseki, which a 2023 guest found a bit formulaic and close to Fufu Kawaguchiko's, while the teppanyaki (a huge awabi in 2024) is the dinner members single out. A free champagne hour is included.
Bath 4.5 / 5
Every room has its own onsen bath, and the two Luxury Premium Suites have both an indoor and an open-air bath fed with free-flowing natural hot spring water, facing the forest with complete privacy even with the curtains up. There are shared baths as well, which a 2023 guest found really amazing, the outdoor one especially, and because everyone bathes in their room they sit mostly empty.
Service 4.5 / 5
Everyone who has stayed reports proactive, attentive service once you arrive: a welcome drink in the lounge at check-in, staff who anticipate what you need, and small surprise gestures a 2024 couple would not spoil by describing. KI-NRT found it warm and personal, though a tad corporate next to a family-run inn, since no butler is assigned to you. The one recurring failure is before arrival, where emails can go unanswered entirely.
Room 4.5 / 5
The base Stylish Suite is already a very large room, with two big beds, a large living room and a bathroom whose private hot tub looks out at the view, and a 2023 family saw no need for anything bigger. The two 140-square-metre Luxury Premium Suites face the forest, private enough to leave the curtains open with the lights on; KI-NRT says to ask for number 306, the end unit. Rooms are Western in style, with beds.
Place 4.5 / 5
Fufu Nikko stands on the former grounds of the Taisho-era Tamozawa imperial villa, and its architecture echoes the villa, so a 2023 guest found the decor expressed a vivid sense of place. The building is modern but understated and blends into the forest; one couple likened it to a luxury safari tent or the best of the Amans. Tosho-gu and Nikko's other great shrines are a 15-minute walk away, and KI-NRT calls it far and away the top inn in town.
Getting there
- Tokyo — 2h, 0 transfers. Tōbu Ltd Exp Asakusa→Tōbu-Nikkō (~2h), then ~5-min taxi.
- Kanazawa — 4h, 2 transfers. Hokuriku Shinkansen Kanazawa→Ōmiya (~2h01), Tōhoku 'Yamabiko'/'Nasuno' Ōmiya→Utsunomiya (~25 min), change to the JR Nikkō Line local→Nikkō (~45 min, ~hourly) + inn shuttle. Two changes (Ōmiya, Utsunomiya) — reaches Fufu via the JR side, not the Asakusa Tōbu.
- Kyoto — 4h40, 2 transfers. Tōkaidō 'Nozomi' Kyoto→Tokyo (~2h15, ~4/hr), cross the Tokyo Stn Shinkansen concourse to a Tōhoku 'Yamabiko'/'Nasuno'→Utsunomiya (~50 min), change to the JR Nikkō Line local→Nikkō (~45 min, ~1–2/hr) + inn shuttle. Two self-handled changes (Tokyo, Utsunomiya). Chosen over the Asakusa Tōbu 'Spacia' (same ~1h50 tail, but a ~20–25-min crosstown from Tokyo Stn on top = +1 change). ⚠ ends on the hourly, snow-slow Nikkō local; ⚠ Tōkaidō services run all-reserved over the New Year peak.
- Osaka — 5h10, 3 transfers. Midōsuji hop Umeda→Shin-Osaka, Tōkaidō 'Nozomi' Shin-Osaka→Tokyo (~2h35, ~4/hr), cross to a Tōhoku 'Yamabiko'/'Nasuno'→Utsunomiya (~50 min), then the JR Nikkō Line local→Nikkō (~45 min, ~1–2/hr) + inn shuttle. Three self-handled changes (Shin-Osaka, Tokyo, Utsunomiya) — the extra half-hour over the Kyoto twin is the further Nozomi run plus the Midōsuji hop. ⚠ the hourly Nikkō local is the fragile end; ⚠ all-reserved Tōkaidō over New Year.
- Nagoya — 4h05, 2 transfers. Tōkaidō 'Nozomi' Nagoya→Tokyo (~1h34–1h40, ~4/hr), cross the Tokyo Stn concourse to a Tōhoku 'Yamabiko'/'Nasuno'→Utsunomiya (~50 min), change to the JR Nikkō Line local→Nikkō (~45 min, ~1–2/hr) + inn shuttle. Two self-handled changes (Tokyo, Utsunomiya); the shortest of the Tōkaidō-gateway Nikkō links. ⚠ the snow-slow Nikkō local still sets the floor.
- Sendai — 2h20, 1 transfer. Reverse of: Nikkō→Utsunomiya (~45 min), change to a Tōhoku 'Yamabiko'→Sendai (~75–80 min; the 'Hayabusa' skips Utsunomiya) — the cleanest version of this leg.
