A · 8.5 / 10anchor a leg

KI-NRT ranks it in his top 20: “Not yet. But it's close. Gosho Gekkoju, Bettei Senjuan and Shinsen could easily be in the Top 10 - it depends on what you're looking for.”

An eight-room hillside ryokan behind a massive gate in Kurokawa Onsen (renamed Gekkoju Kurokawa), with an onsen bath in every room plus private rental baths, including a man-made cave bath and the exposed hilltop Tenku (go after sundown). With Takefue it defines the top of Kurokawa, and KI-NRT says the area's luxury drops off steeply after these two; plenty of guests prefer it, and a 2025 visitor who tried both called it 'the overall best for me.' Book a suite higher up the hill for the valley views.

Scores

Food 4 / 5

Dinner is a twelve-course kaiseki, and both dinner and breakfast are served in your room. KI-NRT puts the food just short of exceptional, much as at Takefue, and a November 2025 guest called it very good.

Bath 4.5 / 5

All eight rooms have their own onsen bath, and in the suites the tub is at the window with the valley below; a November 2025 guest found the view from his bath jaw dropping. There are also several private rental baths, including one inside a man-made cave, which you can use at any time, and Tenku on the mountaintop, reserved at check-in, which he found just as jaw dropping. Do Tenku after dark, because there is no cover from the sun.

Service 4.5 / 5

Service is personal and attentive, and a November 2025 guest called the service from Ms Kurumi, who brought both dinner and breakfast to his room, perfect. Because the rooms climb a hillside, staff can shuttle guests on a golf cart, at least to the rooms slightly lower down the hill, which KI-NRT suggests for anyone who struggles with steps.

Room 4.5 / 5

There are only eight rooms, traditional Japanese in style, and because the ryokan is relatively new they are squeaky clean. The suites have ample space, and the ones higher up the hill have the better views of the valley below and the mountains beyond. A November 2025 guest in the Izayoi room called his first look a wow moment: the onsen bath is at the window with the shower beside it, and the dining table has a footbath built under it.

Place 4.5 / 5

You enter through a massive gate and feel as if you have been ushered into another world. There is no central garden, but the landscaping across the whole hillside is gorgeous, and KI-NRT uses the arrival here as his benchmark for a wow-inducing entrance and groups the property with Takefue and Wanosato for its peaceful atmosphere. Kurokawa Onsen town below is picturesque, nicer still at night when the lanterns are lit along the river.
