A restored two-room former tatami shop on Omihachiman's canal, and a strong argument for staying the night in a town most visitors day-trip from Kyoto. The stepping-back-in-time setting and the straw-grilled Omi beef are the strengths, but the service was reserved and sometimes brusque and the bathing is in-room tubs only, which makes this a fine night out of Kyoto and no more than that. Book Ki-no-ma, which KI-NRT calls the clear winner of the two rooms.

Scores

Food 4 / 5

Dinner is at a counter in front of an open kitchen, and Omi beef is the star: straw-grilled in front of you (incredible aroma), then miso-marinated, then in a tender dashi shabu-shabu. The lake fish are handled just as well (Biwa masu sashimi, tenaga ebi tempura, grilled hamaguri), though KI-NRT missed ayu and the duck course did not win him over. Breakfast (homegrown rice, homemade dashi) is careful but lighter on variety than the top kitchens.

Bath 3.5 / 5

There is no onsen (Shiga has few hot-spring sources), so bathing means the in-room tubs, plain heated water, and they are the rooms' namesakes. Ishi-no-ma's bath is carved from a single massive stone from Kyoto's Kurama area, and Ki-no-ma's is a Koya-maki wooden tub made by an artisan who also crafts soy-sauce barrels. Member jiajin was instantly reminded of the stone bath here on seeing the in-room stone baths at Yamagata The Takinami.

Service 3 / 5

Service was a mixed bag. The head chef explained each dish at lightning speed and disappeared before anyone could ask a question, and the other staff were polite but reserved and not especially proactive. Breakfast was a different experience thanks to Ms. Kawanishi, a Shiga local with solid English who is normally the main point of contact but was off on KI-NRT's check-in day, so it is worth checking that she will be around.

Room 4 / 5

There are just two rooms in a restored 200-year-old sukiya residence, and the restoration never feels overdesigned. KI-NRT's party booked both and compared them directly. Ki-no-ma is a 96 m² detached villa with futons and an upstairs view over the Hachiman-bori canal, sakura trees at the windows. Ishi-no-ma (42 m², Western-style bed, garden view, no canal view) suits anyone who dislikes futons, but otherwise Ki-no-ma is the clear winner.

Place 4.5 / 5

A gated back entrance opens straight onto the Hachiman-bori canal, and stepping out there the first time was a wow moment, with preserved buildings along the water and a real sense of the Edo period. KI-NRT loved the silent pre-breakfast walk to Himure Hachimangu Shrine. Omihachiman is one of the nicer heritage towns in Kansai, easier to reach than Tsumago or Magome and less crowded, though he ranks those two higher for atmosphere.
