Onko Chishin's 2018 rebuild gave remote Iki its only luxury inn: 12 bay-facing rooms, each with a gold, source-fed onsen on the deck, and a kitchen that turns the island's uni, grouper and Iki beef into its reason to exist. KI-NRT says it isn't in his top ten and 'I don't feel it needs to be': it is unique and memorable, especially the onsen and the food, without being a place to build a trip around, and Iki itself is not somewhere he would send a first-time (or tenth-time) visitor to Japan.

Scores

Food 4.5 / 5

Dinner is at the counter, kaiseki one night and teppanyaki the next, and on both of KI-NRT's nights there was copious uni, abalone, fish and Iki beef, which he puts alongside Kobe and Matsusaka. The 'Mama Nakase' tomatoes were so sweet he asked whether syrup had been added. He stops short of calling it the best meal of his life, though some dishes were among his most memorable, and pWei found seafood and produce of a quality rare these days.

Bath 4.5 / 5

All 12 rooms have their own open-air onsen bath on the deck, fed straight from the source and looking over Yunomoto Bay, and the water turns gold once it meets the air from its high iron content, much like the gold onsen of Arima. There are also communal baths and a private bath you can rent in 45-minute slots. KI-NRT called them wonderful hot springs and sorely missed them a year later at the Goto sister property, which has none.

Service 4 / 5

The staff were all enthusiastic and professional, many of them born and raised on Iki, full of advice on the island and able to explain every dish in detail. The receptionist, who also handles pre-arrival email, was a big ball of sunshine whose replies came promptly and went well beyond the question asked. pWei in 2025 found the service good, with GM and executive chef Seiichi Ota explaining the courses himself and free pick-ups at the ports.

Room 4 / 5

All 12 rooms face Yunomoto Bay, and all but the entry-level Corner Tatami Room have Western beds. The top room is the 120-square-metre Kairi Suite, the only one with both a tatami room and a Western living room with couches, so if sitting on the floor is not for you, get it. KI-NRT found it tastefully done, a nice blend of traditional and modern. Two oddities: the bathroom has a urinal, and there is only one sink.

Place 4 / 5

Kairi is on the northwest side of Iki, a remote island between Japan and Korea, with commanding views over Yunomoto Bay; there is no garden, and the ocean view stands in for one. Iki is not somewhere KI-NRT would send a first-time visitor to Japan. It is paradise for history buffs, though, with the Harunotsuji Yayoi-period site and Kojima Shrine on an islet you can reach only at low tide, and even in peak season it stays blissfully uncrowded.
