Kanshuku-en Eshikoto is an eight-villa auberge opened in November 2024 by the Kokuryu sake brewery beside its ESHIKOTO complex near Eiheiji, the Soto Zen head temple, and each is a whole-villa rental of about 103 square meters with a semi-open-air onsen bath and Echizen-craft art. Dinner is at the Michelin one-star Japanese En or the French cadre, with the house Kokuryu sake. Ikyu guests give it 4.71 across 38 stays, with the villas and the bathing their high marks and breakfast the recurring quibble. Nobody in the thread has stayed yet, though KI-NRT recommends it to anyone visiting Eiheiji.

Food

Dinner is at En, the Michelin one-star Japanese restaurant, or the innovative French cadre, with the house Kokuryu sake, and breakfast is a French-touched Japanese spread at the neighboring acoya. Ikyu guests mark the meals their softest note (4.54), and while the cooking is praised, breakfast is the recurring quibble, judged too plain for an inn of this class.

Bath

Every villa has a semi-open-air bath fed by the alkaline Eiheiji Zen spring, a sodium-chloride-bicarbonate 'beauty' water that arrives by pipe and is not free-flowing. It looks out over the fields and the Kuzuryu River, and Ikyu guests put the bathing among their highest marks, just behind the villas themselves, with the in-villa soak and its valley view what they praise.

Service

It is a quiet eight-villa auberge run by the Kokuryu sake house next door, and brewery tours come with a stay. Ikyu guests mark hospitality solidly (4.74), below the villas and bath. The whole-villa privacy and the sake-and-food framing suit a low-key stay better than a staffed ryokan's bustle.

Room

The eight villas are whole-villa rentals of around 103 square metres in three concepts, with art chosen by the ceramicist Koichi Uchida from Echizen crafts and global pieces, and most face the Kuzuryu River. Ikyu guests give the rooms and amenities their highest mark, with the design and the space the standout, and KI-NRT describes the place as new and modern.

Place

The villas stand at the foot of Mt. Johoji on the Kuzuryu River in Eiheiji, beside the Kokuryu brewery's ESHIKOTO complex and near the Soto Zen head temple, which KI-NRT calls phenomenal and historic, though he notes the inn is a bit out of the way. Cherry blossom comes in spring, deep snow and river mist in winter, and zazen and the dawn sutras at Eiheiji are a short drive away.
