Kofuyuden Beniya
unscored · Ikyu 4.8 / 5no first-hand write-up in the thread

A long-established 24-room inn in Awara Onsen with a private partly open-air bath in every room and Echizen snow crab in winter, which is why most people make the trip. Ikyu guests hold it in very high regard (4.82 across 183 reviews), praising the crab kaiseki and hands-on hospitality, and the recurring caution is that the room-bath water runs very hot. It is a different inn from Beniya Mukayu in Yamashiro, which is in a different prefecture.
Scores
Food
Winter here is Echizen crab, served in your room, and you choose how it comes: the whole crab boiled, or the legs as sashimi with the shoulders and shells grilled. Ikyu guests put the food at 4.9, their highest mark, and the crab kaiseki and the unhurried pacing of the in-room dinner are what they praise most.
Bath
All 24 rooms have their own semi-open-air onsen bath piped straight from the source, unrecirculated and unchlorinated, which KI-NRT singles out for anyone wanting a real onsen stay. The recurring note from Ikyu guests is that the water runs very hot, so the staff warn you to add cold water before getting in; they put the bath at 4.75, their lowest mark for the inn.
Service
Ikyu guests put service at 4.85 and describe warm, hands-on hospitality, an in-room dinner paced course by course and staff who warn you about the hot room bath before you get in. Two 2026 reviews are cooler on the staff's polish. Nobody in the thread has written about the service here.
Room
All 24 rooms have their own semi-open-air onsen bath, and since the 2021 rebuild KI-NRT finds them traditional in type but airy and fresh. Ikyu guests put the rooms at 4.79, just below their marks for the food and the service, and describe them as clean and well kept.
Place
The inn was rebuilt in 2021 by the architect Tetsuo Kobori (winner of both the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize and the JIA Grand Prize in 2017) after a 2018 fire destroyed the property and three registered cultural-property buildings. It stands in the heart of Awara Onsen, Fukui's quiet Sea-of-Japan hot-spring town and the most prominent in the region, and KI-NRT recommends pairing Fukui with Eiheiji, which he calls phenomenal.
