The 150-year-old flagship of Kinosaki Onsen and KI-NRT's annual crab pilgrimage: four stays in, he still names its Matsuba-gani kaiseki the best crab cuisine he has ever had and doubts anywhere ever will compare, served in your room in a traditional house built around a garden. His November 2023 stay found the kitchen below its past peaks, though it stays in his rotation. Book the November–March crab season; bathing is in the communal baths plus Kinosaki's seven town bathhouses, since no room in Kinosaki may have an onsen by town rule.

The Matsuba-gani crab kaiseki, served in your room from November to March, is KI-NRT's benchmark: he has yet to stay anywhere that compares to the crab cuisine here and doubts he ever will, and gives it the edge over Bouyourou. The crabs arrive the same day from Tsuiyama and Shibayama, each held alive in its own tank. A 2025 couple called the crab-and-Tajima-beef dinner simply fabulous; his own fourth stay was not quite up to earlier ones.

There is no onsen in any room here, or anywhere in Kinosaki, which KI-NRT understands to be a town-wide rule; even the top suite's open-air tub is free-flowing but is not hot-spring water. The real onsen is in the inn's gender-segregated communal baths, and the rest of the bathing is the town itself: Kinosaki's seven public bathhouses, all tattoo-friendly. A 2025 couple visited three of the town baths as well as the ryokan's own.

Dinner is always served in your own room whatever the room type, and since 2022 breakfast is in the restaurant unless you are in Honjin no Ma. A 2025 couple called the service on their two-night stay impeccable, and KI-NRT has returned four times without a complaint about the staff, though it is the crab and the garden he writes about.

The 34 rooms come in a dizzying array of types, and most face the garden except those in the new annex. KI-NRT found the 90m² Honjin no Ma, the top room, spacious and not at all dated, with a Western dining table, but he prefers a ground-floor suite like Kiri no Ma for its eye-level view of the garden.

Kinosaki Onsen is KI-NRT's quintessential onsen town, with a small river through the middle, gift shops, snack shacks and seven public bathhouses, and he calls it one of the most picturesque in Japan. Inside the gates Nishimuraya is a respite from all that, built around an immaculately landscaped inner garden that turns up on magazine covers, and most rooms face it.
Getting there
- Kyoto — 2h30, 0 transfers. Ltd Exp 'Kinosaki' Kyoto→Kinosaki Onsen direct (~2h30).
- Tokyo — 5h, 1 transfer. Reverse of: Kinosaki→Kyoto (~2h30) + Shinkansen→Tokyo (~2h15) — a full travel day.
- Osaka — 2h45, 0 transfers. Ltd Exp 'Kōnotori' Osaka Stn→Kinosaki Onsen (~2h40, direct, no change; ¥5,940–6,540, seat reservation mandatory). Central Osaka departure — the Kyoto twin ('Kinosaki' Ltd Exp, ~2h30) is barely shorter, so base city doesn't decide this one. (Zentan bus ~3h, ¥4,100, is the cheap alt.)
- Kanazawa — 4h45, 2 transfers. Reverse of: Ltd Exp 'Kinosaki'/'Hashidate' Kinosaki-Onsen→Kyoto (~2h30, direct), change to the 'Thunderbird' Kyoto→Tsuruga (~53 min), cross-platform to the Hokuriku Shinkansen 'Tsurugi' Tsuruga→Kanazawa (~43 min). ~4h06 of riding plus two connection buffers. ⚠ Since the 2024-03-16 Hokuriku Shinkansen extension the Thunderbird terminates at Tsuruga, so the Tsuruga change is mandatory — there is no through service. ⚠ The San'in approach is snow-prone in January. Researched 2026-07-26 (was falling to a 5.0/2 hub estimate; the estimate was within 15 min).
