Chikurintei is the only bona-fide luxury ryokan in Takeo Onsen, with 11 secluded rooms at the foot of Mt. Mifuneyama, every one with a private onsen bath, both meals served in your room, and service KI-NRT ranked above Aman's. The weak point is the kitchen, because for all its regional ingredients dinner did not live up to its tour-de-force reputation on his December 2024 stay. He would happily return, but in bloom season, when the park next door is at its best.

Scores

Food 4 / 5

Dinner uses top regional ingredients such as Saga beef filet and nodoguro, but KI-NRT did not feel it lived up to its tour-de-force reputation: there were fewer dishes than at other luxury ryokans, the nodoguro wrapped around vegetables was strange, and the fried potato stuffed with sea urchin was dry and buried the uni. The fried buckwheat dumplings with walnuts were terrific. Ikyu guests find the meals close to perfect; he did not.

Bath 4.5 / 5

Takeo's spring water is a true onsen, smooth on the skin from its sodium bicarbonate, and all 11 rooms have their own bath flowing from the source, with Shuho adding a private open-air bath off its rock garden. There is a communal open-air bath too, and if the water in your room runs too hot an engineer shows up at once to adjust it. Guests have free use of the famous Rakan-no-Yu sauna two minutes away, but it refuses tattooed guests.

Service 4.5 / 5

Service is sophisticated and elegant. The room attendant, Emi Suzuki, in a silk kimono, was an amazing advisor on touring the area and gave them a real education on the kitchen's cooking methods, and the room was refreshed every time they went out, even for a 30-minute walk in the park next door. KI-NRT says Aman's room ninjas have nothing on her. They are flexible too, giving you a chair and table instead of floor seating with a day's notice.

Room 4 / 5

Shuho, the 250 square meter stand-alone villa that hosted Emperor Akihito in 1992, has its own entrance, an open-air onsen bath, a private rock garden and commanding views of Mt. Mifuneyama, and it was renovated in 2017, though KI-NRT found wasted space in tatami rooms that serve no purpose. He would have been happy in a mid-category Japanese-Western room, plenty spacious and all with onsen; Gochiku and Shakunage are the popular picks.

Place 4.5 / 5

The inn stands at the foot of Mt. Mifuneyama beside Mifuneyama Rakuen, a gorgeous park founded in 1845, two kilometers from the historic bathhouse district of 1,300-year-old Takeo Onsen. The gardens around the mountain burst with color from azaleas, wisteria and maples in March and cherry blossom in April, and KI-NRT came in leafless December and wants to return when the flowers are out, because in winter the park goes silent and monochrome.
