River Retreat Garaku
unscored · Ikyu 4.6 / 5no first-hand write-up in the thread

River Retreat Garaku is Toyama's design showpiece on the Jinzu gorge, with Hiroshi Naito architecture, serious art, in-room onsen-and-sauna suites and a French restaurant, and nobody in the FlyerTalk thread has stayed here. The kitchen holds a Michelin Green Star, and Ikyu guests rate it 4.63 across 89 reviews and describe a strong art-and-dinner stay, though a recurring minority calls the aesthetic self-indulgent, the bathing ordinary and the staff inexperienced. It is a promising design-and-sauna stay, but an unproven one.
Scores
Food
Dinner is French at the in-house Trésonnier, which holds a Michelin Green Star (L'évo and its chef left in 2020, so older food press describes a kitchen that is no longer here). Guests praise the Toyama ingredients, crab, white shrimp, grass-fed beef and vegetables from the hotel garden, with strong wine pairings. Ikyu guests put the food at 4.59, though a minority find the more experimental courses miss.
Bath
The Annex Premier suites have their own hot-spring bath, and two of them pair it with an in-room sauna, while the guest spa adds a dry sauna and a cold plunge. That is an unusually strong sauna offering for a ryokan, and the in-room bath is also the way around the tattoo ban in the public baths. Ikyu guests put the bathing at 4.7.
Service
Service is understated and hospitable in the guest accounts, and the staff are described as cheerful. After check-in they run a guided art tour of the building and garden that explains the thinking behind the pieces. Ikyu guests put service at 4.52, their lowest mark for the inn, and the recurring complaint is inexperienced staff, so a stay that goes right on the design and the dinner can still stumble on the floor.
Room
There are roughly 23 rooms, each individually designed, across a forested riverside estate, and the Annex Premier suites with their own onsen run 115 to 150 square metres. Hiroshi Naito's architecture and a museum-grade art collection set the tone, and the rooms look onto the Jinzu River. Ikyu guests put the rooms at 4.67, among the strongest points here.
Place
The estate sits in the forest on the Jinzu gorge outside Toyama, and the lobby's stacked precast-concrete wall in the azekura style was designed by the architect Hiroshi Naito. Art fills the building and garden (a guided tour after check-in explains the pieces), the garden grows vegetables for the kitchen, and rooms look straight onto the river. It is riverside scenery in the foothills near the city, so snow is lighter than at deep-belt inns.
