Ryokan Suiranrou is the flagship of Hitoyoshi Onsen and the birthplace of the town's hot-spring culture, largely destroyed by Kumagawa River flooding and rebuilt in 2021 as a clean, modern 30-room inn. KI-NRT would not rank it among Japan's most luxurious ryokans, and he calls it exceptional value and a memorable onsen experience, with three distinct springs making up for décor that cuts corners. He found it a rewarding overnight for anyone routing through southern Kumamoto, though not a destination in itself.

Scores

Food 4 / 5

Dinner at Dining Soho is a restrained kaiseki built on garden produce and Kumamoto ingredients: chawanmushi with eel and fine soba strands, a salt-grilled yamame trout and a hot pot of Miyazaki chicken. Nothing is extravagant, but KI-NRT thought the regional flavors came through well, and the slightly smaller portions were a blessing. The one drawback is the half-walled dining rooms, where a loud party next door carries through.

Bath 4.5 / 5

The onsen is the highlight here, with three spring sources on one site, and guests can try all of them. Mikage-no-yu, the original bath from 1910, has the softest, skin-beautifying water, and its uneven Matsuyama granite gives it a retro feel; the two large communal baths, Suizan-no-yu and Suiga-no-yu, each have a sauna. Midori-no-yu has two private moor-water baths, rentable by the 50 minutes, which KI-NRT says are definitely worth paying for.

Service 4 / 5

Ms. Yayoi, a 20-year veteran of Suiranrou, served KI-NRT's dinner and was one of the highlights of his stay: attentive, with deep knowledge of the cuisine, and she explained every dish down to where the nori came from (the Ariake Sea) with genuine enthusiasm. Nobody has written about the rest of the staff.

Room 3 / 5

The top room is the 86 m² Luxury Japanese-Western Room, a junior suite with a free-flowing private onsen looking over the Kumagawa River, spacious and with lovely views. The décor felt a bit on the cheap side to KI-NRT, with faux wood paneling on the counters, plastic furniture disguised with wood trim and thin towels (the ones in the baths were little more than hand towels). He recommends a Deluxe or Luxury room, which have their own bath.

Place 3.5 / 5

Suiranrou stands on the bank of the Kumagawa River in Hitoyoshi Onsen, a small onsen town in southern Kumamoto where few travelers go. The building was largely destroyed by the river's flooding and rebuilt in 2021, and KI-NRT found the reconstruction clean and pleasant, if lacking a bit of character; the quality touches are a terrace with a small water garden, a lounge with floor-to-ceiling glass facing the river and excellent ikebana throughout.
