Ryokusone
C · 6.7 / 10situational
A seven-room traditional inn on a small hill above Kanazawa, a ten-minute drive from Kenrokuen and the Higashi Chaya district, whose top room is the Yamaboushi duplex suite, but which has no onsen and no garden. It was KI-NRT's go-to across three stays in a city where no stay had ever satisfied him, so the praise is relative to a weak field, and the kitchen slipped between 2019 and 2022. The question is moot now in any case, because the ryokan has gone out of business.
Scores
Food 3.5 / 5
KI-NRT found the dinner great on his 2019 stay but weaker by his 2022 visit, so the kitchen was heading the wrong way.
Bath 1.5 / 5
There is no onsen at Ryokusone, and KI-NRT suggests it only to travelers for whom onsen is not a requirement.
Service
Nobody in the thread has written about the service here.
Room 4.5 / 5
The top room, the Yamaboushi special room, is a duplex suite with an upstairs bedroom, and it is the room KI-NRT chose to photograph for his primer entry, because he was much taken with it.
Place 3.5 / 5
Ryokusone sits atop a small hill overlooking Kanazawa, about a ten-minute drive from the Higashi Chaya district and Kenrokuen, so it may not suit anyone who wants to be near the tourist centre. The inn is quite traditional in look and feel, which many guests will appreciate, but its footprint is very small and there is no real garden to speak of, which KI-NRT found a pity in the city of Kenrokuen, one of Japan's three most famous gardens.
