Ryotei Hanzuiryo
A · 8.8 / 10anchor a leg

Ryotei Hanzuiryo is the most famous and luxurious of the Unzen ryokans, and KI-NRT counts it among the most renowned in the country: a 14-room sukiya-style ryotei where an outstanding in-room kaiseki, an otherworldly 300-square-meter villa and omotenashi at its finest all came together on his December 2024 stay. Book one of the two Tokubetsu Shitsu by phone a year out, because they are the only rooms with in-room onsen. He has stayed once and has not said where it ranks for him.
Scores
Food 4.5 / 5
The 'ryotei' in the name means a place that serves high-end Japanese cuisine, and KI-NRT's dinner, served in the room, lived up to it: an Ariake Sea torafugu medley, an arrowhead-mochi dumpling with lily bulb in a grated-daikon dashi that he found unforgettable (like mochi but much lighter), and artful plating. He calls it a top-notch showing of the best Nagasaki has to offer, and the head chef stayed on through the Onko Chishin acquisition.
Bath 4.5 / 5
Only the two Tokubetsu Shitsu have in-room onsen, because the older Unzen properties hold first rights to the hot-spring fields and limit what Hanzuiryo can draw; every other room uses the communal onsen bath, which KI-NRT calls a significant drawback if in-room bathing matters to you. In the Jyuen villa the outdoor rock bath is real onsen and was amazing, and the villa also has a sauna and an indoor bath that is not onsen.
Service 4.5 / 5
Service was among the best KI-NRT has experienced. The room attendant, Ms. Hata, was charming and explained each dish in exhaustive detail; each time they left the room they came back to refreshed towels, tidied cables, replaced cups and a refilled cotton-swab jar; all the staff greeted them with a smile from 50 feet away, and the car was valet-parked each time. Nagasaki Joe, who has also stayed, calls the service traditional and exemplary.
Room 4.5 / 5
The Jyuen villa is 300 square meters, one of two Tokubetsu Shitsu with its own gate and path, with a tatami room, a Western living room, a sauna and a sukiya hallway wrapping around it. KI-NRT found it spacious but not spartan, the down comforter heavenly and the amenities beyond a first-class airline kit. Even standard rooms are 250 square meters. Nagasaki Joe, who has stayed, dislikes the Western furniture mixed into the traditional rooms.
Place 4.5 / 5
The sukiya-style buildings blend into lush surroundings, moss-laden gardens and koi ponds, and the vibe is incredibly peaceful, reminiscent of Takefue, Gosho Gekkoju and Wanosato; KI-NRT calls the setting mystical. It is a secluded pocket about 10 minutes on foot from central Unzen and the Hells. He notes it is not surrounded by natural forest; the first-floor rooms look straight onto a well-maintained garden with pretty trees.
Getting there
- Fukuoka — 3h, 2 transfers. Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen relay Hakata→Isahaya (~1h40 via Takeo-Onsen), then Shimatetsu bus Isahaya→Unzen Onsen (~1h20). One night only — the private-onsen special rooms make a second night pricey.
- Kagoshima — 3h35, 3 transfers. Reverse of: Bus Unzen→Shimabara Port (~40 min), 'Ocean Arrow' high-speed ferry→Kumamoto Port (30 min, ~every 2h), timed port shuttle→Kumamoto Stn (~25 min), 'Sakura'→Kagoshima-Chūō (~50 min). Gale days: all-rail via Isahaya/Takeo (~4.4h) is the fallback.
- Nagasaki — 1h15, 0 transfers. Reverse of: Rental car ~47 km / ~1h15 (R57 down the mountain → Chijiwa → Isahaya → Nagasaki) — only the top ~10 km of the descent carries ice risk (owner: Unzen assumes a car, 2026-09-13). Without a car: Ken-ei bus Unzen→Nagasaki (~1h40), or back to Isahaya and Ltd Exp on.
- Kumamoto — 2h10, 2 transfers. Reverse of: Shimatetsu bus Unzen→Shimabara Port (~40 min, ~hourly), 'Ocean Arrow'→Kumamoto Port (30 min, ~5/day), timed free shuttle→Kumamoto Stn (~25 min). Ariake gales → all-rail fallback. With a rental: the Ocean Arrow carries cars (¥5,100 4–5 m class + ¥1,600/passenger; 6 RT/day in Jan; car slots open 1 month out — reserve, walk-ups are first-come); the slower Kyusho ferry (60 min, ¥3,900) is the gale-day fallback; Shimabara Port→Unzen is a 19-km climb to 700 m (~26 min, budget 40) — the most freeze-prone road in Nagasaki Pref.
- Tokyo — 5h, 3 transfers. Fly via Nagasaki: Tokyo→Haneda (~30 min), HND→Nagasaki (NGS) ~1h50, then up the Shimabara peninsula by bus — NGS→Isahaya (~35 min) + Shimatetsu bus Isahaya→Unzen Onsen (~1h20), or the infrequent direct airport→Unzen bus (~100 min).
- Kanazawa — 6h45, 5 transfers. Airport bus Kanazawa→Komatsu + KMQ→Fukuoka (~1h40) into Hakata, then Nishi-Kyushu relay Hakata→Isahaya + Shimatetsu bus to Unzen Onsen (~3h). ~6.75h — the longest of these.
