A 29-room auberge resort in the foothills of UNESCO-listed Yakushima, with an ocean-view pool and French-inspired cooking, which KI-NRT calls as close to an Aman as a Japan property can get, except that the food is better than at most Amans. There is no onsen anywhere on the property and the rates are steep even for a property of this class, but both of his stays were exceptional ("no aspect of our experience caused a blemish"), he thinks the restaurant ought to have a Michelin star, and he would go back for the food alone.

Scores

Food 5 / 5

Dinner at Okas is chef Kenji Hayashi's French-inspired cooking built on local ingredients, and the tasting menu changes completely every day without ever turning rich or heavy, so KI-NRT meant to eat there once and went every evening of both stays. He calls the Pain Rustique the finest dinner bread he has ever had, says Okas ought to have a Michelin star, and until Sanso Amanosato thought this was Japan's best auberge kitchen.

Bath 3 / 5

There is no onsen at Sankara, which KI-NRT calls a pity since top properties usually have one, so the indoor and open-air baths in the Sankara Suite are ordinary hot water. Instead there is a large, beautiful outdoor pool (you see it, and the ocean, from the lobby) and a serious spa, where his masseuse remembered his treatment from two years before. mdlgto, a 2016 guest, adds that the undeveloped tidal onsen elsewhere on Yakushima are magical.

Service 4.5 / 5

Service is warm, attentive and refined, at what KI-NRT calls an Aman-like level: airport transfers are complimentary and private, and a fleet of cars can be rented from the hotel by the hour. No butler is assigned, but two years on the staff had kept his preferences, so a bottle of wine was waiting instead of the Champagne they knew he dislikes. Most of the staff were the same on his second visit, which he says speaks well of the management.

Room 4.5 / 5

Book the 104 m² Villa Suite (KI-NRT had Room 10) over the 126 m² Sankara Suite. The Villa Suite is clean, spacious and tastefully furnished, its ocean panorama is unobstructed, and the amenities are top notch down to the toothbrush. The Sankara Suite adds separate living and dining rooms, an open-air bath and a spa room, but roofs sit in its line of sight, and he found the spa room overkill when the actual spa is a short covered walk away.

Place 4.5 / 5

Sankara sits in the foothills of a mountain range on Yakushima with the ocean below, a Bali-esque resort whose buildings are modern in function but muted and earthy in tone, so they have a sense of place without dominating the landscape. Yakushima itself is a UNESCO World Heritage island, unbelievably green, whose famous moss forests inspired Princess Mononoke, and KI-NRT ranks its scenery and hiking among the most incredible in Japan.
