Sanso Tensui

Amagase Onsen, Hita, Oita · Kyushu · 19 rooms · Onsen ryokan

A · 8.6 / 10anchor a leg

KI-NRT ranks it in his top 20: “If our experience there is any indication, I'd argue that it's easily among the 20 best ryokans in all of Japan, and priced at a fraction of the rates that top properties command in nearby Yufuin.”

A 19-room onsen ryokan in a moss forest outside Hita, built around giant boulders beside a river and waterfall, with bathing KI-NRT calls second to none at a place he argues is easily among Japan's 20 best. At $420-600 a night it is a real bargain against neighboring Yufuin. The Taisho-era interiors charm some and put off others, and the sulfur smell and waterfall roar are strong enough that sensitive sleepers should take one of the five onsen-free rooms.

Scores

Food 4.5 / 5

Both meals on KI-NRT's December 2024 stay were incredible: cherry trout from Oku Hita fried in whole grains, a cod-milt chawanmushi he found dreamy creamy, and a sake-lees kasu-jiru in place of the usual closing miso soup. The suites eat in their own room and everyone else gets a private room in the main restaurant. zander86 found dinner excellent too and recommends the shabu-shabu or sukiyaki option for a small top-up.

Bath 5 / 5

The onsen is source-fed and the hydrogen-sulfide smell is at least as strong as at most springs KI-NRT has tried; he calls the bathing second to none. Three gender-segregated public baths include Takimian, up a long staircase with a view of Sakura Falls, and five free private rental baths face the Goraku River. Kamayu is a two-person tub shaped like an udon bowl with jacuzzi jets, and zander86 was told it and Kiriyu have the best views.

Service 4 / 5

Dinner was elegantly served by Yuko Baba, who patiently explained every course in painstaking detail. On zander86's stay the staff surprised him with a birthday gift, which he thought a very nice touch. Neither guest has written more about the service than that.

Room 4 / 5

The three special suites each have a terrace and an open-air rock bath on the deck facing the forest. KI-NRT's Kaori is 85 sqm, furnished in Taisho-era style (the sink sits on a Singer sewing-machine base), which is not to his taste, though it gave a soothing sense of place. The sulfur smell is acute even with the doors closed and the river is extremely audible, so sensitive sleepers should take one of the five rooms without onsen.

Place 4.5 / 5

The 19 rooms sit in a moss forest beside a gushing river and a waterfall, far enough from the centre of Hita that you feel secluded, and the architects built around the massive boulders to preserve the terrain. The buildings are traditional rural Japan and charming, and KI-NRT calls it the top property in the greater Hita region. Mameda-machi in Hita is a preserved merchant quarter with the most impressive Hina doll museum he has seen.
