A 14-room design ryokan in Niigata snow country built around Keiko Kuwakino's foraged, vegetable-driven cooking at Sanaburi, which KI-NRT says gets no better anywhere than here and at Enowa. Book The House Izumi, the huge restored farmhouse with its own source-fed bath, because the main-building rooms are bland by comparison. All three stays across two winters were enthusiastic, and there is no dissent.

Scores

Food 4.5 / 5

Dinner is at Sanaburi in the main building, where Keiko Kuwakino cooks mostly from foraged mountain vegetables and an astonishing variety of mushrooms, with several fish courses and sometimes wild boar or deer. KI-NRT called the kotake mushroom risotto on Minamiuonuma Koshihikari rice a masterpiece and says vegetable-led cooking gets no better than here and Enowa, with a slight nod to Enowa. Ask for one of the private rooms in advance.

Bath 4 / 5

The House Izumi has its own open-air onsen bath fed by a spring that rises directly beneath the house, which makes it the only place with access to the Echigo Yukiguni Onsen, plus a sauna. The main building has a communal daiyokujo with an open-air rotenburo, and a December guest who came for snow bathing found the view from it amazing. Only a handful of the 12 main-building rooms have onsen of their own, so the rest rely on the communal bath.

Service 4 / 5

Arrivals at The House Izumi are met by a staff member who handles check-in there, and a private shuttle runs the 10 to 15 minutes between the house and the main building, which you use at least once for dinner at Sanaburi. There are English-speaking staff on hand. When February snow stuck sirky's transfer vans a few hundred metres from the entrance, everyone walked in and he still called the stay great. Nobody has complained about the service.

Room 4 / 5

The House Izumi is a restored 182-square-metre kominka farmhouse for one party a night, which KI-NRT found "huge, private, comfortable and just quirky enough to be memorable", with several living and tatami rooms, a sitting area for the valley view, a sauna and an open-air bath. The 35 to 50-square-metre main-building rooms seem kind of bland by comparison, and only a handful have onsen. Snag Izumi if it is available.

Place 4 / 5

The House Izumi sits on a small hill above the Minamiuonuma valley, ringed by mountains, in the rice region KI-NRT agrees grows Japan's best Koshihikari, and this is snow country, buried all winter (the snowbound view from the communal rotenburo was the highlight of a December stay). The main building is charming, but in November 2024 its grounds and koi ponds were ripped apart by relandscaping, which is probably finished by now.
