A seven-room hideaway deep in the Fukushima mountains, built around Shinpeki, a two-level private rotenburo beside a forest stream that KI-NRT ranks with Takefue's best bath. Setting and service run at the level of Tohoku's top inns, and the kitchen is the one relative weakness, finely crafted but below the region's best tables. Book Shinpeki the moment you arrive, because it can only be reserved on the day and the slots go fast.

Scores

Food 3.5 / 5

Dinner is a Tohoku kaiseki served in your room or in a private koshitsu dining room, and the dishes are finely crafted: KI-NRT's standouts were the clear soup with sea bream in a kudzu coating that locks in the umami, and the inro-mushi of steamed Spanish mackerel, crab and kabocha under a glossy crab gin-an. He found the food satisfying but not as memorable as at his next two ryokan stops.

Bath 5 / 5

There are no communal baths, only four private bathing areas booked in 45-minute slots, plus the in-room baths, and the spring water is soft and silky. Shinpeki is the one to take: an upper rock bath and a hinoki tub lower down beside the forest stream, and KI-NRT ranks it with Takefue's Chikurin no Yu among the most blissful private open-air onsens he has soaked in. The others felt anticlimactic after it, though Minahada is pretty decent.

Service 4.5 / 5

Service was fantastic and personal: Kazuki, a warm and welcoming local, handled check-in, looked after them and served dinner, and Serina ran breakfast and the mornings just as expertly. The house also sells only seven of its nine rooms so that every guest gets a Shinpeki slot, the guest-first approach KI-NRT most appreciates in a high-end ryokan, where profit never overshadows hospitality.

Room 4 / 5

Kason is the only stand-alone villa and the only suite, a few steps from the main building down a path lined with weeping cherries, and it has a bedroom with Western-style beds, a living room, an empty washitsu for extra futons and an impressive open-air stone bath, expertly carved and set into its surroundings. The other eight rooms looked pleasant, and all have heated floors, as most top Tohoku ryokans do. Get Kason if you can.

Place 4.5 / 5

Satonoyu is deep in the Fukushima mountains at the bottom of a steep hill of hairpin turns, ringed by untouched forest, and KI-NRT recalls the setting as awe-inspiring; where Kawasemi's beauty is a manicured garden, Satonoyu's is the natural environment. A short trail drops from the side entrance into the valley past a creek of wild watercress, serow roam nearby, and mid-May's shinryoku green or the autumn leaves are the seasons to aim for.
